The High: I am a long time Myles Clohessy fan and this one was cute. It’s definitely trope #31 minus the he leaves for two years, LOL.
All spoilers and no filters ahead.
Lillian Elliott (Morgan Tate) is fired from her job and also gets the news her visa is expiring and she is going to be deported. She’s drinking at the bar with her friend Dora who suggests she gets married. After a bump into hottie Theodore Thompson (Myles Clohessy) and an overheard conversation, her friend suggests she marry him as it solves both their problems. After a shot for courage she pretends to be tipsy and trips into Theodore and suggests they get married. He carries her off into another room to discuss the idea. Lauren tells him she’s not drunk and reveals she needs to get marriage because she needs a green card. Theodore agrees after a “no affection, no love, no money” conversation and Lauren agrees. He introduces himself and when Lauren starts to do the same he tells her he doesn’t need her name for this…Okay, pretty rude.
They get married, also dude her name is on the marriage license, Theodore gets ready to split and Lauren asks where he’s headed. When he tells her she asks for a ride as she has a job interview in the same building but he blows her off. She takes off her blue wig she was wearing which means, Vertical Drama trope #175, she was wearing a wig so now he doesn’t recognize her without it. Lauren enters his building and reaches reception for the job interview but is immediately ignored when Charlotte of the “I will marry anyone but Charlotte,” shows up. Charlotte is taken to Theodore’s office where he once again rebuffs her. Lillian is interviewed for the job when she sees her graduation designs framed on the wall, so I guess Theodore has been a long time fan.
When Lillian walks out she spies her husband in the hallway and she tries to text him only to find out he blocked her. When she jumps on the elevator with him and his assistant Anna she discovers Theodore is her boss and when she asks why he blocked her he denies knowing her. Later, Lillian is called into Theodore’s office where he seductively asks “Don’t think I don’t remember you” and he pulls her by the waist into his body, accuses her of tracking him, grabs her by the throat, lifts her up and bites her neck. He’s a vampire! And then she jumps out of her daydream, LOL. That was such a quick twist. But then there is Theodore telling her to come to his office, it’s happening!
Nope, he wants her to work on her designs so he sends her to sit in his office and work on them. Anna comes in a flirts her ass off, or tries to anyway. She falls on Theodore and he pushes her away. Her ploy to get his coat to cover he ripped skirt doesn’t work as he tells Lillian to give Anna her coat instead. Theodore calls her out for hitting on her boss and sends her back to work. He compliments her work and sends her off with an assignments to read a book. Theodore is called to family dinner and when he tries to bring his WIFE she chews him out for ghosting her. He pretends it was an accident, but she’s tired of his bossiness so she rejects him only to find herself having to go anyway when he takes his employee to be his fake…fake wife? HAHAHA Theodore gives her the project to design Fiona’s Garden. Anna comes and throws coffee on her later after Theodore sends Anna on her way. Lillian just turns her wet shirt into a canvas. I legit thought she was going to show up in some hand drawn outfit like she did to her shirt,
Lillian shows wearing a white oversized number and Theodore says something comparing Anna and Lillian and then backtracks by telling Lillian it’s not that she isn’t beautiful, she’s just uptight. Well, with compliments like these, how is she anything less than confident. When they’re at dinner his family tells him they know Lillian isn’t his wife, just an employee. They want Theodore to marry Charlotte and he refuses and fights with his father. Theodore bribes Lillian to go drinking with him. She asks him why he hates Charlotte so much and he says he doesn’t he simply has no feelings for her and love is all about fake hormones. She asks how he feels about his wife. Girl, he literally just met and married. Theodore doesn’t have feelings for her…you…when he doesn’t even recognize you without a wig on. He confesses he doesn’t remember her face, but she had a unique aura…whatever that means.
Lillian takes off to use the restroom and is accosted by a man when Theodore shows up to save the day. One of the men has a two foot metal pole in his back pocket, LOL. It cracks me up! Damien, Theodore’s cousin arrives and tells the men they can fight but he has their sexual harrassment and property damage on camera, so make good choices. The men walk off and Lillian is enthralled with Damien, which means he’s probably going to be a bad guy (I’m calling it right now!). Theodore introduces Lillian but is also flipping her shit for being a flirt. We see Damian snap a pic of Lillian and Theodore together.
Charlotte shows up for work but she uses it to question Anna about Lillian and Theodore’s wife. Charlotte calls Lillian in to bully her by telling her that her design is shit and when that doesn’t work throwing a glass at her, cutting her leg. Theodore rushes in and ask WTF is up and Charlotte says “Your wife Lillian was yelling at me.” Lillian is worried she’s about to be exposed (I mean, is she? He doesn’t even know his wife’s name), Charlotte shows the picture of the two of them together and Theodore denies everything.
Charlotte tries to steal Fiona’s project from Lillian with her design ideas, but they are opposite Fiona’s aesthetic so Fiona is pissed at Theodore. Lillian saves the project by discussing her environmental ideas. The office is gossiping about Lillian and Theodore and all the late nights they have been working. Damian drops by and tells Lillian she looks exhausted. He offers her free spa treatments and Theodore interrupts, calls it bribery and confiscates the spa treatment. Lillian throws the completed project on Theodore’s desk and tells him off.
Lillian goes out drinking with her friend, but her friend is called away. Lillian accidentally pick up Theo’s call and he hears her tying one on at the bar. He arrives to pick her and she mistakes him as a “male model” (aka gigolo) that looks like her boss that she flirts with. She barfs and passes out and Theo takes her home. She wakes in a strange room and Theo can’t identify people not wearing a wig and Lillian can’t see clearly through steam. Theo is showering and Lillian is just staring. She rushes out and decides to play the drunk so he doesn’t think she’s a weird pervert.
Theo accuses her of pretending to be drunk and asks her to prove it, so she kisses him. He starts moving in for a real kiss and the doorbell rings. Lillian rushes off to answer and it’s Damien. Lillian packs up and drops her work product for LM which sets off the scheming Damien. They arrive for a work party and Damien has plotted for a man to take advantage of Lillian. Later the man corners Lillian but Lillian is badass and gets the upper hand and when Theo walks by she’s on top of him whaling on him. Damien records it. The man is begging Theo to make her stop and Theo tells him she’s off the clock, so she can do what she wants, LOL.
Damien tries to stir the pot with Papa, but Theo turns the table. The man Lillian beat down tries to sue, but there are tons of lawsuits against the man for assault. Papa tries to fire Lillian but Theo tells him LM loves Lillian’s designs. Damien pretends to support Theo, and Lillian can keep her job. At the office, Anna is trying to get an underling to do work and she’s told no because Lillian is Anna’s equal now. Anna is annoyed by this and Damien swoops in the harness her desire for revenge. Anna sneaks onto Lillian’s computer and downloads some designs to put them online so Lillian can be accused of plagiarism to damage her standing in the company. Lillian is staying at Theo’s house to work.
Charlotte breaks the news that Lillian is being accused as a plagurist and Theo contacts LM to get time to disprove the online rumors. When he doesn’t support her outright, Lillian texts her husband and hate messages him, LOL. At a meeting Theo reveals that Anna was actually behind the scheme, but she doesn’t reveal that Damien put her up to it. Theo goes to tell Lillian the whole situation is cleared up but he finds her on the streets drunk. She tells him off but he convinces her to come back home with him and they kiss all the way back home where they finally make love.
The next morning Lillian is trying to sneak away but Theo stops her and she asks about his wife. She almost tells him, but he interrupts her to grab her a gift of her college art. Then Charlotte rings the doorbell telling him she’s moving in and loves him. Theo is all, naw girl. Charlotte demands he get rid of his wife AND his girlfriend, LOL. Damien and Anna continue to scheme and try and make Theo look bad in front of the board while pretending to be on Theo’s side after Charlotte’s family cuts ties with Theo’s company costing them millions. Flash to Damien working Lillian too to make her doubt she’s doing right by Theo. With rumors still flying in the company about Lillian being Theo’s secret wife he contact his wife to start divorce proceedings.
Theo has plans to divorce as soon as he gets a yes to the divorce from his wife and his frustration leads to him bad mouthing her to Lillian, which leads to both of them being frustrated with one another. Damien runs into Lillian and convinces her to go out with him for a meal. At the dinner, Damien continues to weedle Lillian about a long lost love of Theo’s (Lillian) and Theo shows at the dinner and carries Lillian out of the room and takes her home. Lillian asks if she’s divorcing his wife to marry Charlotte. Theo tells her he doesn’t want to have anything to do with Charlotte. She asks about his first love and denies there is one. Finally he tells her that Damien can’t be trusted. She questions him because he said he didn’t believe in true love and he finally confesses that he was naive and he thought that way before he met her. He wants to marry her. As soon as Theo clues in that she knows more than she’s supposed to, she kisses him and they make love.
More Theo and Lillian rumors are sparking scandal at work. At work, Charlotte is trashing Lillian. Lillian is finally getting smart about team, Damien, Charlotte and Anna trying to take Theo down. Lillian meets up with Damien, and he shares info about Theo saying she’s a pet and he doesn’t love her. Flash back to Theo telling Lillian he’s going to fake fire her to protect her. Lillian’s friend gathered evidence of Damien and Anna following her and Theo around but she’s attacked and nearly hit by a car before Theo can save her. Lillian wakes and accuses Damien of plotting against Theo and he brushes it off as nothing.
After Damien leaves, Theo reveals he knows the truth and Damien has been out to get him from jump. Theo tells her he just needs more proof for the family. Theo runs off to share the proposal with the LM group while Damien makes plans to kill him. Charlotte pops into Theo’s house and tells her THEO is DEAD and Papa is in the hospital from the news and The board is about to handoff the company to Damien. Lillian says “oh hell no.”
At the board meeting, Lillian says she’s pregnant and Anna says she’s pregnant too. The board says, well, Lillian is his girlfriend, but Anna says she’s his WIFE! Before Lillian can reveal the marriage certificate, Theo slow claps himself in and says, nice try bro. He has all of the evidence to put Damien in jail. Lillian and Theo rush off the see Papa in the hospital. Charlotte comes in to the room and threatens Theo with her families connections. Papa gives props to Lillian for being so kickass. When Charlotte says the business will go bankrupt, Papa tells Theo if it fails just start a new one. He’s learned that it’s most important to be alive and be happy. Theo announces his true love for Lillian and that the LM project is signed and sealed. Papa tells Charlotte off so she storms out.
They return home and Lillian is still trying to figure out how to break the news that she’s his wife. They have a romantic dinner and Lillian teases him about his first love, knowing it’s her. Papa interrupts with gifts for the baby, but she tells him it was just to stall Damien. Theo leans over and whispers they can try again tonight. Dirty! She decides to reveal herself by inviting him to the courthouse for the divorce. She pretends to wait with him and then drags him before a clerk and pulls out the marriage cert and blue wig. He’s shocked and thrilled it’s her. The End.
