Dr. Kiss Me Stat
This story is really sweet, cute, and funny.
The High: Rachel Swift (Emma Reinagel) is such a great character. She is bold and confident, completely comfortable in her own skin. She doesn’t shy away from telling people what she thinks, or her love interest her feelings. There should be more FMC like this! We don’t need any wallpaper background leading ladies that have to learn to be their true selves because their light is too bright for the men in their lives. I’m thinking of all the “my ex-husband wants me back because I’m a secret billionaire” Vertical Drama tropes. Can we teach women that if they have to make themselves less for a man, then that is not the man for them? Anyway, I freaking love Rachel Swift.
All spoilers and no filters ahead.
The series opens with a drowning Rachel Swift being pulled up by the nicely tattooed arm of a man. Cut to three years later and Rachel has run into the man, Dr. Aron Jones (Travis DesLaurier), at her dermatology appointment. While she’s swooning over him and giving her best flirt, Aron seems to be immune to her charms. She asks if he remembers her and at his blank stare, she tells him he saved her life. She leaves, but bravely asks for his number before leaving his office, to which he replies “no’, Rachel refers her friend Emma to Aron as another attempt to try and catch his eye, but he still rebuffs her advances.
The magical Vertical Drama gods align and one quick turn they’re “accidently” kissing. Umm, I have never turned so close to another human that our lips touched. That is such a weird “oops!” moment and every time I see it I’m just confused as hell about how they managed to do that. Despite the smooshing of their lips, Aron is still a no go.
We get some backstory that Rachel is an actress, but due to a “backstabbing witch” she’s working at a school teaching acting instead of actually acting. While dancing on stage with a student, Aron arrives to pick up the little girl and she calls him “Daddy.” Rachel is calling Emma trying to figure out next moves when someone throws an egg at her (in this economy??) and shouts at her about her stealing a man from her bestie Lindy. Aron arrives in the nick of time to take an egg to the back (again, these rich motherfuckers can waste eggs? Wow!) as Rachel’s attackers run off.
Aron bring Rachel home to his daughter to get cleaned up. When she thanks him for his help, he claims Abby was the one who wanted to save her. Abby stage whispers it was his idea. Abby reveals Aron isn’t her father, just the daughter of a close friend. Later, Aaron and Rachel walk back to her place, Rachel dropping hints left and right when she invites him up and he announces he’s not interested in her. Rachel is like, give me a month and I can change your mind.
The next day at the theater, Rachel is replaying the conversation she had with him and feels like a big dork. Lindy, the backstabbing witch (Mair Mulroney) arrives as does Aron. Rachel confronts Lindy about her lies but Lindy keeps attacking Rachel because Rachel is able to steal Lindy’s spotlight. When Lindy sees Aron, she turns her whiles on him but he’s not interested in her at all. The run in with Lindy is enough to spur Rachel back into acting.
Rachel meets with Leo to discuss revitalizing her acting career. For him to hear her out, she has to drink the remaining bottles at his table (sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen). Rachel is capital D drunk, about to fall on her ass when Aron arrives and she plants a kiss on him. Aron tells Leo he should give her a chance and Aron reveals he’s known her for three years, oh so he does remember her, hmmm? Aron takes her home and reminisces about saving her three years, but then gets his feelings hurt when he misunderstands a phone call that he for some reason answers on her phone but doesn’t talk. Why is he butthurt? Maybe don’t answer a strange woman’s phone, huh? Hearing she’s just looking for booty is why he walked away from her three years ago.
Rachel wakes the next day hungover while Emma scrambles with getting her working for Leo’s company. Leo is a friend of Aron’s and wants her to leave his crushed heart alone, so he stipulates that he’ll pay to end her contract with her previous representative and sign her with his agency, but only if she doesn’t date for one year. Also, what does that even mean? Date? No dinner, but a straight fuck is fine? A blowie in the alley? Like, spell it out in black and white, man.
Rachel finds Aron drinking his troubles away so she joins him. He confesses he made a mistake three years ago that he can no longer hold a scalpel. They kiss and make love. The next morning Rachel is going to confess her feelings for him, but he stops her because he knows about her contract with Leo. He hurts her by saying their night was a bad sex scene and Rachel is DEVASTATED. He voiceovers that if she still loves him a year from now, he’ll never let her go. I hate all these “I’m doing what’s best for you” moments, as if adults aren’t capable of making their own choices. They do it in all the time in Vertical Dramas “his mom convinced me to leave him for career/opportunities because I’m poor/pregnant/have a shitty family” and I hate them too. If he resents you for having a baby and “holding him back”, then he wasn’t the right one for you. Ugh! Hate. Leo calls and asks, are you signing on the dotted line? Rachel agrees (because she is heart broken!)
Rachel heads out to Lindy’s agency to kill her contact and let her know she’s with Leo’s firm now and twist the knife a little. Emma gets Rachel a role and she has to shadow a doctor and it’s none other than Aron. Rachel wows him with her compassion helping his patients. While in the hospital, Rachel overhears some hot goss that Aron killed someone on his table. When a few doctor are fan boy-ing over Rachel, Aron cockblocks them. When she calls him out for his jealousy, he deflects. When one of the fan boys breaks loose and chases after Rachel he pulls her into a supply closet and presses her up against the shelves. He repeats the message he overheard on her phone three years ago and Rachel is like, umm, that movie role I did three years ago? What about it?
Rachel starts shooting her movie and feeling the pull from Aron, but her contact prevents their closeness. Then Lindy busts in saying she’s the new lead of the project threatening to have daddy pull the funding from the project. Rachel asks why she’s doing this to her and Lindy responses that she hates her. She says she’s going to take everything from him and lists all the things, “probably that plant, definitely going to take him, take those two... What else do I want…” and then points to Aron and says she’ll take him. Aron tells her that’s not happening and he’s allergic to snotty nose brats who bathe themselves in too much perfume. Lindy continues saying she’ll just replace Aron and Leo walks in and pledges more money, but Rachel must stay the lead. Lindy calls her dad for backup and he tells her she’ll have to play a supporting role. Rachel is clued in that Leo and Aron know each other, but Aron denies it.
Rachel is again trying to talk about feelings and Aron again runs off, then Rachel gets text from Lindy saying she knows Aron’s secret if Rachel interested. Rachel heads to the meeting place to see Lindy and Aron looking like they were kissing. Aron throws Lindy off immediately and rushes after a fleeing Rachel. Instead of TALKING to her, he asks if she was jealous. Somehow there is a loose bloody scalpel on the table and Rachel cuts her hand. Aron tends her hand and tells her he doesn’t like Lindy, so in a very high school move, Rachel asks him who he does like, and he asks isn’t it obvious?
Rachel and Lindy are acting together as two enemies and Lindy uses it as a chance to slap Rachel. They shoot again and Rachel slaps Lindy this time. Lindy gets pissed and says she’s leaving, picks up a fire extinguisher and hits Aron in the back of the head when he was protecting Rachel. While being treated for the head wound, a former intern, Alex, runs into Aron and tells him he thinks another guy, Lucas, framed Aron for the death on his operating table.
Aron recalls the event that lead to the death of the patient. Rachel supports him telling him even if he’s not a surgeon, he’s still a good doctor. Alex is all, at least your girlfriend is great and Rachel says she’s not his girlfriend. Aron leans over and holds her hand and says “you’re not?” Alex reveals all he knows about the incident, so the Scooby Gang hatch a plot to get Lucas to confess where he hid the surveillance tape by getting him drunk. While waiting in the bar, Rachel gets harassed by a patron and Aron comes over to save her while people are taking photos. After Lucas starts talking, Aron thinks he knows where the tapes are hidden. He and Rachel search his office and find it, but have to rush off to hide in a closet when the security guard is checking out the office.
Aron and Rachel rush home to make love but a phone call interrupts and Emma reminds her again of the no dating clause. Aron apologizes saying he forgot about her contract. Rachel asks if he wants to be her “sneaky link?” She says it would just be for a year, but withdraws when Aron hesitates answering. He agrees and they go back to making love.
The next morning Aron sets off Lucas by telling him his hand is better and he’s ready to be a surgeon again. Lucas worries about what Aron might know so he leaves his office with Rachel tailing him like a hot babushka. Rachel is awful at being incognito, and the man with Lucas immediately notices her taking photos of them but she plays it off that she was just taking selfies. Aron comes in to see who plotting against him with Lucas. Aron recognizes the man in the photo as Ray, the Chief of Surgery. Rachel asks what his motivation was and Aron says if it weren’t for the accident, they would have been competing for the same job.
Aron calls the hospital director and Rachel heads off to set, but as she’s going she gets into the wrong car. What a dumb way to kidnap someone. You have to ensure they need a ride in your car, what if she didn’t need a car like ever? Lucas uses Rachel’s kidnapping as leverage over Aron to return the USB drive, again, dumb. You think Aron didn’t make copies, or did they not even make copies first? Like make a copy and mail it to all of your friends and family incase something happened to you. So dumb. Aron hands over the USB and Lucas isn’t satisfied with just the evidence and wants to ruin Aron’s life so he tries to stab him, but Rachel gets in the way and is stabbed instead. The police arrive to take care of the problem.
Aron, Emma and Leo are waiting in the hospital for news about Rachel. A nurse comes out with consent paperwork for her next of kin and Aron says he’s her boyfriend so he’ll sign it (Um, yeah, that isn’t how that shit works, but okay, Vertical Drama, you do you, boo). Leo says since when? Alex comes out and says only Aron or Ray could possibly perform this tricky surgery to save Rachel…so the murderer or the surgeon 5 years out of practice…rock meet hard place. Emma wants to rush off to get Ray to perform the surgery but Aron steps up and says he’ll do it (so now he’s next of kin and also surgeon of record? Wow hospital policy sure hits different in a Vertical Drama). Emma and Leo both question if he should be the one to perform the surgery, but Aron insists he’s the right choice.
And she dies.
LOL, just kidding, but she should have, that was so dumb :) Of course Aron saves Rachel. When she wakes the next morning, the stabbing victim is worried about Aron, freaking dumb. Leo comes by to visit and give her and Aron shit for ignoring the dating ban in her contract. Rachel tries to play Aron off as just a friend, but she can’t even pretend. Leo stands firm that she violated the contract, so she offers to quit. Aron chimes in and tells Leo it just says they can’t date, it doesn’t say anything about getting married and the friendship between Leo and Aron is exposed.
Rachel says “hold up, bitch” you’ve been lying to me this entire time, but you somehow want to marry me? WTF? She gives in, but she has a condition for Aron. She has been the one pursuing him the entire time, so now it’s his turn to pursue her and Aron agrees. Rachel gets out of the hospital and returns home, she sends Aron on his way and texts Emma to initiate the plan. Aron goes to the hospital to kick Ray out of his position and Ray is arrested. The surprise with Emma is to celebrate Aron’s new promotion to Chief of Surgery. Aron has already picked a ring and proposes to Rachel, she accepts and says yes.
While celebrating Aron’s father interrupts to tell them Rachel isn’t good enough to join their uber wealthy family. For a woman not trying to be a gold digger, knowing the family company’s amassed wealth right off the top of her head isn’t a good look, lol. Aron tries to talk to Rachel, but his father interrupts and bashes Rachel’s career and history. Rachel says “Peace out!”
Aron tells off his father for being more focused on money and control than being a dad. He tells his father if he has to choose between the company and Rachel, then he’ll pick Rachel every time. Lindy pops up again as the proverbial bad penny being exposed as the one who brought Papa Jones to the office. Aron calls Lindy’s dad and tells him to make Lindy stop or he would bankrupt the Miller company, who immediately calls Lindy, chews her out and sends her overseas.
Rachel cries to Emma that her fiancée just constantly lies to her and she’s super over it. Her kneejerk reaction is to move away. Aron cries into his beer to Leo and boo-hoos. Leo says, “Hey idiot, she’s wonderful, go after her.” Aron doesn’t know where she is, but lucky Leo does and Aron takes off to find her. When he finally meets up with her, Rachel tells him she’s so done with all of his lies and needs time because even if he’s telling the truth she can’t believe him. She crosses the road and a car is barreling down the road, Aron sees and with the reflexes of Spiderman shoves her out of the way and is hit by a car.
Aron hams it up in the hospital bed and pulls Rachel in and confesses her loved her three years ago and Rachel wasn’t alone in her feelings and he has the body tats to prove it. Okay, I would love a close inspection of those tattoos please, Travis DesLaurier. For authenticity. Aron proposes again and says Papa Don’t Preach, he’s a nonfactor in this whole thing. Rachel of course says “Yes.”
Papa Jones comes back and tries to scare Rachel off again, and it comes out that Papa Jones is actually sad that Aron didn’t tell him he was proposing and he’s sad he’s not closer to Aron. Rachel hands over the invitation Aron was saving for his dad. Later, Aron is looking for the invite, but Rachel tells him she hand delivered it to him and he cried. Looks like Papa Jones got his redemption arc.
Cut to the final scene of Rachel and Aron getting married with Papa Jones hugging the bride and groom at the altar. The End.
