I Accidentally Slept with My Professor

Okay, this one was cute. Most of the “professor” stories are, “My huge age gap professor is boundary crossing and wildly inappropriate” but this one had a meet cute BEFORE they met in the classroom…I mean, usually the others one also meet before class, but it’s like “I bought her at a party and now it’s awkward she’s sitting in class in front of me.” In this story, Nick and Annie have an entire summer romance, and I am totally here for it!

The High: Kasey Esser is just the OG of Vertical Dramas. I nearly always click in to watch his Verticals, even when they’re just retellings of the same Vertical that has been done over and over again…the ne’er-do-well that ends up actually being a billionaire CEO, the secret billionaire in a flash marriage, the billionaire trying to seduce his wife he doesn’t recognize because they were just married on paper and then he left town for 3 years to return home and try to romance her, but misunderstandings lead to him thinking she’s in a relationship because the woman he sees kissing the man is actually her roommate and he’s never even seen a picture of his wife before…so all of the tropes, really. :) If it has Kasey, it has me watching, but in a completely clinical, detached sort of way…not creepy stalker…well, maybe just a little…maybe.

All spoilers and no filters ahead.

The story opens with sweet looking Annie Collins (Shanna Sinow) thinking about her great summer but being slapped down to Earth when she runs into a group of bullies that are giving her crap for being on a scholarship? I don’t know about y’all, but this must be a college of 10 kids. Cause there isn’t enough time to give two shits about what other people are doing in college, much less care who has or doesn’t have a scholarship. Gross. She’s like well, there goes my day, but then it’s made worse when she goes to class and sees her ex, Sam, is the TA. As soon as she thinks the day can’t get any worse, in walks professor dreamy pants, Annie’s summer fling, Nick Tucker. Squee!

Nick spies her the moment he walks into the room. Flashback to three months earlier when some asses are hassling Annie at the bar and Nick walks up and pretends she was waiting for him. Nick punches one of them and sends them on their way. Annie thanks him and Nick says she should stay until her friend arrives in case them come back. Annie stays but calls Nick out for knowing she wasn’t waiting for anyone. Annie caught her boyfriend cheating so she went to the bar to pick someone up to get close to someone. Nick offers a no names, no connection, no feelings relationship. Annie is down. Meanwhile Elly Astor, Nick’s ex-wife is lurking in the background and sees the whole thing.

Back in the moment, Nick gives a lecture about opposing forces a perfect correlation about their own relationship, with glimpses of Annie and Nick and them making making love. Elly is trying to reach Nick but he isn’t responding to her at all. Annie wanted to try a relationship with Nick, but Elly calls interrupting with a suicide attempt so Nick runs out, all part of Elly’s plan. She texts Annie saying “we’re through”, then goes to Nick’s and leave a note from Annie telling him their relationship is over. Annie blocks Nick’s number.

Back in class, Nick pulls Annie to the side and asks why she isn’t in Minneapolis, and she’s like why do you care? Annie goes to work at the coffee house and has a dick of a manager. She is a kind person and helps a customer and pays for a dropped coffee but gets bitched out by the manager. Nick arrives for a coffee and reminds Annie of the sexy times they shared. Annie spaces out and Nick snaps her back to reality. Sam comes by the coffee house to annoy Annie with a complicated order that he changes repeatedly. Annie hands him back his cup with Asshole written as the name on the coffee.

In class, Nick is asking one of Annie’s bullies, Victoria, questions about astronomy and she can’t answer any questions correctly, so he asks Annie and she has the correct answers. Victoria straight up spills her coffee on Annie and follows her into the bathroom when she’s cleaning up. Nick chooses Annie as a class assistant, but it’s clear that Annie is the only one doing any of the work for class. Later in Nick’s office, she asks why she got the job, and he lists her achievements and tells her it isn’t because they slept together. Annie challenges him and she reads every one else’s essays, but none of them came close to what she wrote.

Sam keeps attempting to flirt with Annie, so Nick sends him off to work. Nick pulls Annie into his office to question Annie about Sam and asks if they dated. She’s like, that’s personal, I don’t have to answer. Nick says she does because she belongs to him. Annie STUPIDLY loans out her USB drive to Victoria( literally the bitch that constantly bullies her, what a dumbass) and she returns it to Annie completely blank. Annie is still able to give her presentation without her slides. At the end of class, Annie is a giggling mess and being inappropriate and Nick drags her off and she passes out. Annie wakes with a headache and Nick asks why she was drunk in his class. Annie thinks someone put something in her drink, and she doesn’t want to report it. Nick is all that’s fucking stupid and if I find out who did it… (Also, I call bullshit. There is no liquor on earth that doesn’t taste like liquor, except maybe some mixed drinks. And the girl was pouring straight from the bottle. So, double bullshit. Maybe like triple dose caffeine would have been believable so she seemed like a speed freak, or like Jessie from Saved by the Bell, 🎶I’m so excited🎶 [My 1900’s friends will get it] And vodka has a taste. Not a ton of smell, but a shit ton of taste, so triple bullshit!).

Annie is working at the coffee house when Elly comes in. Nick gets a call from Elly about Annie but lays tracks of dishonesty at Nick’s door with news about how Annie has struggled and says Annie targeted him. Nick doesn’t believe her, but has a hard time reconciling the evidence Annie sends him. Then Annie launches a cyber attack at the cafe to overcharge the customers, making it look like Annie is a thief. The manager freaks on Annie and thinks she’s been stealing and tries going through her purse and threatens the cops. Nick arrives and helps Annie. The manager tries to fire Annie and Nick tells him she quits. The manager threatens to call the cops and Nicks says I’ll call the owner and tell them how you treat people. Annie says I would like to keep my job, thanks. Nick is like WTF, let’s leave. Annie says fuck off! This job lets me work and study and the hours and tips are good. Nick offers her money and Annie says, how do I repay you? Blow jobs in your office? Annie is like, hey Silver Spoon, do you know what’s like to need to worry about money? I can’t afford to stop working or school to get a better life. AND, you dumped me, so why the fuck do you care. Nick is like, what?? You ended it. She’s all whatevs and walks back into work.

Nick learns he’s up for researcher of the year, but Nick has a dark past with another student, very red flag. He worries that if there is anything problematic that Annie might get tangled up with it and it will hurt her career as well. Annie wonders if she was too harsh with Nick and wants to forgive him when he tells her to go drop her papers off in his office. Annie is frustrated so she messes up his perfect desk. She was going to town until she spies a paper star. Nick confesses that he kept everything she gave him. Flashback to a sweet moment from them together in the summer. Both of them are very conflicted, and they give into their desires and fuck on his desk.

Sam again stops Annie and accuses Nick of being the reason Annie won’t see him anymore. Nick pulls her into his office to ask about Sam. Annie is like why do you care? Nick asks Annie why she always says Nick ended it. He shows her the note that “she” left him and she’s like that isn’t my handwriting, it wasn’t me. Nicks says then why did you block my number and she unblocks it and shows him the text he sent her. He says he didn’t send it. They are minutes away from revealing their feelings for each other when Annie has to run off to work.

While at work, a special delivery arrives for Annie, a beautiful gown and email with a notice for winning the Astor Scholarship. At the ceremony Nick and Annie are trying to play it cool. Annie’s nerves are getting the best of her and she’s drinking a bit. Nick says he can help her relax and they go to a patio and Annie is like we’re not hooking up here, people can see. Nick asked if she thought he was taking her to hook up and she said, well, yeah. Nick was amused that she still followed him out. He instead gave her some stretching exercises to relax her before her big speech.

And this is where Vertical Dramas are killing me! Elly asks if Nick is sneaking off to see his protege and the actress mispronounces the word protege and I think in the real world of movies, someone would have called CUT and reset the scene and redid the line. Instead, she pulls a William Shatner (again, I was born in the 1900’s) and just pronounces words how she wants. She says praw-tuh-zhay instead of pro-tuh-zhay. See, filming a whole ass movie in 8 days is going to cause a few missteps. Like saying words wrong and just going with it. Then in the SAME scene she says, “that is quite the acquisition” instead of accusation. Yup! Cut, print, we’re done here! No, let’s not fix it at all. And the subtitles also match! LOL, that is too funny. I’m sure it was day 7.75 and they’re like we literally cannot go for 5 more minutes. It’s praw-tuh-zhay and acquisition now, NEXT SCENE PLEASE, LOL.

Anyway, Elly is like Annie got the scholarship because of me and if you don’t play my game, I’ll take it away from her. Anne texts Nick and asks what' he’s doing after. He says, “You, I hope.” Elly says that Annie shouldn’t sleep her way to the top and plants the idea about Nicole and tells her to ask Nick about that. Elly slaps Annie on her way out after Annie tells her Nick will be in bed tonight. Sam launches a whole litany about what Annie wants in her life and how she isn’t a risk taker and all Nick is is a giant risk. Annie asks Nick about Nicole and he tells her when Elly was done with him, she got Nicole, who had a crush on him, to kiss him and Elly got photos. Nick never had a thing or was ever with Nicole to begin with. Annie and Nick get it on in the bathroom. She deliberately leaves lipstick on Nick’s lips before he leaves.

Elly recruits the class bullies, Victoria and her crew to go after Annie. Nick brings Annie back to the planetarium? classroom? Somewhere with a big projector and projects the stars onto Annie’s skin and holds her. The next day, Annie arrives to school and everyone is looking, laughing and talking about her. There is a personal ad advertising Annie for sex. Elly brings a police file to Nick and says that this is Annie’s MO to seduce men and bleed them dry. Annie had previously lied about her parents being dead, and Elly corrects Nick and tells him her parents are still alive, just junkies running scams in Minneapolis. Victoria and her crew continue to harass Annie. As Nick begin class, he announces that Annie wrote a great paper. Another student tells Nick that the paper she wrote is already online and she copied it word for word. Nick says he’ll look into it.

Later Annie arrives at Nick’s office and tells her to leave the door open. He asks if things are real, and about her parents. She admits that her parents are still alive and she didn’t tell the truth because she’s ashamed of them. Nick asks what he was supposed to do and she’s like WTF? You’re supposed to trust me, like I trusted you. Later Annie gets notice that her scholarship has been canceled. Elly calls her and tell her to leave or she will continue to be destroyed.

Nick is drinking in his office looking at the paper and photos when he notices that Annie’s scar is missing from the photo so he knows it’s a fake. Also, she was right, why the fuck does she have to defend herself when you should just believe her. Sam shows up and tries to weasel his way back into Annie’s life. Annie isn’t a dummy though and she knows that student had to be tipped off to the paper because no one else knew the topic she wrote about. Annie is suspicious and sneakily calls Nick. Sam begins to rough her up and tells her he isn’t a quitter. Nick heard enough of the conversation that he was able to arrive on time and save Annie. The police come for Sam. Nick apologizes and says he should have believed her from the beginning. He wants to start over and get another chance. Annie says it’s too late, bitch. When we were anonymous we worked and now that we know each other we just don’t work. Nick tells her it was all worth it, even the crappy parts.

Elly tells Nick she’s pregnant using the embryo they created before they divorced, which she uses to emotionally blackmail Nick. He still doesn’t want to have shit to do with her. Nick is drinking and Annie comes by his office to try and start over again, but he’s tore up because of the maybe baby with Elly. He rejects her to attempt to get her away from Elly, scared she’ll be tied up with his shitstorm.

Nick is dressing and receives a phone call from the fertility clinic about an outstanding balance. He asks about the embryo transfer and is told it was unsuccessful, so Elly is finally exposed. Annie gets a call about a work gig. She asks what to wear and is told the uniform is provided. It’s a beautiful gown and Annie is not serving drinks but providing “atmosphere”. Nick is at the event receiving his award for researcher of the year. Nick pours his heart out and confesses he’s a shit teacher. He states that a student was bullied and lost a scholarship because he didn’t defend her when she needed it. Elly chases after him and asks WTF was that? Nick confronts Elly about the fake pregnancy. And he asks why she did all the things she did. She confesses that she did all those things, pulling the scholarship, activating the bullies and so on because Annie was taking what was hers. She says all kinds of shit and Nick is all, “you’re right, I’ll go back in and apologize.” When they reenter the room, Everyone is staring at Elly and Nick reveals his microphone in his jacket. Elly walks off the stage and attempts to slap Annie, and Annie slaps her instead. The bullies walk out with their tails between their legs.

Annie and Nick have a heart to heart and she’s like you can’t make decisions for me. Annie realizes he did bomb his entire career for her. She allows him to win her back and then they can talk about their relationship. Nick goes to the patio and asks Annie if they’re starting over. She’s like, I’m at your house and we just had sex. Duh? He tells her he would still like to hear it. She says no, but we can keep going. And they kiss to close the series. So sweet!

Okay, now see. This is like a spicy romance novel. I like show not tell when it comes to them hooking up. It’s what makes these stories not so Hallmark cutesy for me. This one was fun!
